ELEGANCE IN DINING

Personal silver of the Victorian period was a great show of wealth, not only in the value of precious metal but also in the sheer quantity of pieces deemed necessary for daily life.  The lady of the house would have her own cache of silver pieces in her boudoir; the gentleman required his cupboard filled with his needs crafted of silver; and children were each supplied with numerous personal pieces, quite often miniatures of those of their parents.  The most opulent display of the personal wealth of a household, however, was in the presentation of visible silver – particularly in the dining room.

Dining became an art form during the Victorian Age.  As meals became more elaborate, pieces for serving and consuming the foods were demanded and produced.  With the introduction of each new and exotic food, a new “necessity” of silver flatware was created and added to the coffer in the dining room.
